Berries for Birds is Certified as a Pollinator-friendly Garden
Harpswell Garden Club’s newest garden at Harpswell Historic Park, Berries for Birds, was planned and planted in 2026. This garden has now been certified by the University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension as a Pollinator-friendly Garden. To earn this certification, a garden must offer a variety of native plants during the each of three parts of the growing season. The plants must offer food sources for caterpillars and adult pollinators. Project leader Leslie Spieth and volunteers from the Harpswell Garden Club removed invasive plants, obtained an appropriate variety of native plants, and planted them throughout the early summer. A brigade of waterers was on duty during the hot, dry days of July and August to keep the new plants alive.

Planting Berries for Birds: Stage 1 May 2026
We all look forward to seeing how these new plants attract pollinators to our gardens. Stop by in the coming months to see how our gardens grow. Harpswell Historic Park surrounds Centennial Hall at 936 Harpswell Neck Road in Harpswell.
