Visit to Gardens in Cape Elizabeth
Members of Harpswell Garden Club took advantage of a beautiful sunny day to participate in the Open Garden Day hosted by Garden Club Federation of Maine. Two lovely gardens in Cape Elizabeth were opened to members of GCFM, and several of Harpswell’s members were able to enjoy the flowers and scenery.
Karen Rea, the president of GCFM introduced the morning speaker at the Schulz garden. Andrew Tufts, Maine Audubon’s “Bringing Nature Home” manager, addressed the group to tell us about Maine Audubon’s work with various groups to encourage the use of native plants in the landscape. Native plants provide much needed food sources for our native birds and insects, and he displayed samples of some of his favorites, including white oak and little bluestem grasses.
The second garden opened to GCFM was a seaside garden lined with hydrangeas and rose of Sharon. Two talented floral designers displayed their talents, making nearly a dozen arrangements using flowers from their gardens. Two lucky members of our club were able to bring an arrangement home.
