Sale of Mums and Asters Exceeds Expectations!
Harpswell Garden Club members and the community of Harpswell really stepped up to help make this year’s scaled-down fundraiser quite the success! Almost 300 mums and asters were pre-ordered this year — more than doubling the total number of plants EVER sold by the Club! Once again, Dale with Mid Coast Growers in Bowdoin came through, supplying the Club with beautiful plants. This was the first year that the Club ordered asters which came in shades of blue, purple and pink. The mums, whose flowers were just starting to open up, came in shades of bronze, red, white, yellow, pink and purple. Thanks to all the many Club volunteers who were on hand to help with this year’s project. Special thanks go out to our Chairman Tuckie Westfall for her organizational skills in putting this year’s fundraiser together (see her holding one of the huge bronze mums). Becky Gallery was also on hand to assist Tuckie with making sure the correct plants went home with our buyers. We also should thank both Ken Dunn and Les Klein for driving their trucks all the way to Bowdoin and back to Centennial Hall to help Dale deliver this massive load of plants. Dale had to make two round trips himself just to bring all these plants to Harpswell. According to Dale, he grows 3,450 mums and asters every season! When you add up how many plants our Club purchased, we were probably one of his biggest clients this season.
