That’s Invasive: a HIPP visit to Harpswell Garden Club
As members of Harpswell Garden Club gathered in the shade on a warm, sunny afternoon, a variety of invasive plant samples were in view. Linda Wilkins and Becky Gallery, representing the Harpswell Invasive Plant Partnership (HIPP) set up a display of a dozen different invasive plants found in Harpswell. They also brought a sampling of the tools used to combat the growth of these plants in Harpswell.
After Becky’s introductory remarks, she and Linda described the plants on display and offered tips on how best to work at controlling their growth. There is no one way to treat invasive plants. Linda explained that some treatments are time-sensitive, and should be undertaken at the appropriate time of year for maximum effectiveness. Vigilance is also needed, as re-growth can occur, necessitating re-treatment. HIPP has had a guide booklet printed that includes identification tips for 22 different invasive plants, as well as the recommended steps to control those plants. She emphasized the need to follow the guidelines for timing of treatments and how to apply an herbicide, if that is the selected control method.
The meeting concluded with a question and answer session, and the guidebooks were offered to club members for donations. For more information on HIPP, its mission and the guidebook, visit their website.
