Notes from the 87th Annual GCFM Convention
Several members of the Harpswell Garden Club were in attendance at the recent GCFM Convention, held in Phippsburg, Maine at Sebasco Harbor Resort. We were entertained by a flower show organized by GCFM’s Judge’s Council, Paul Parent’s talk on adding color to your gardens using trees and shrubs, and Marta McDowell’s talk on her book, All the President’s Gardens. Many of us also enjoyed a beautiful day touring fabulous gardens on the Phippsburg peninsula.
During the annual business meeting, Nominating Committee Chairman Deb Burnham advised the convention on upcoming openings on the GCFM Board. The committee is in need candidates for Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and 2nd Vice President. Think about volunteering for one of these positions. The convention finished on Wednesday afternoon with the annual distribution of awards. Our president, Elisa Civello, accepted the Club of Distinction certificate on our behalf. National Garden Clubs, Inc. President Nancy Hargroves also recognized Suzanne Bushnell and the club for their efforts in establishing the Gold Star Memorial Marker and garden that is being dedicated on Saturday, June 23 at the P-3 Park in Brunswick Landing.
The Convention was a great way to make new friends, greet old friends, see beautiful gardens and enjoy enlightening talks. Next year’s event takes place at Villages by the Sea in Wells, Maine on June 18 and 19. Save the dates on your calendar to be a part of a great gardener’s experience.
