A Beautiful Day to Visit a Garden
I took advantage of a warm, sunny day and an open calendar to visit the McLaughlin Garden and Homestead in South Paris. Upon arrival, I entered a wonderland of blooms–purple, white and lavender lilacs, pink trillium, bleeding heart, and Solomon’s seal, to name a few. The air was filled with the scent of flowers and sound of pollinators visiting the blossoms.
I found a newly-planted bed, and discovered a connection to Harpswell. The Historic Iris Preservation Society is working with McLaughlin Garden to grow several of Dr. Currier McEwan’s iris cultivars. Perhaps a future visit will reward me with a glimpse of the blooming irises that were developed here in Harpswell.
The lilacs will soon be fading, but other flowers will take center stage. Spend some time in Bernard’s garden, and you will find a moment of peace.
